Buzkashi game
Daulatabad, Afghanistan
Riders provoke their horses to head into the furious melee. Some riders have partners who will whip their horses for them from behind, since the horses are so reluctant to enter the fray. In the midst of this chaos a rider must lean down to yank the carcass off the ground and then dash off with it. To take this picture I am standing in the VIP platform set up for the sponsors of this game -- local merchants and politicians.
