Shop keeper's abacus

Herat, Afghanistan

The collison of the west and the oriental is clearly seen in this Afghani scene. This book shop keeper has a strong epicanthus (Mongolian) fold typical of Chinese eyes, and he is adding up his accounts using an abacus. He also drinks green tea. But the books he sells are written in Arabic script, and his culture is dominantly Persian, and of the west.
