Kulu Valley

India

Every fall the Kulu valley holds the battle of the gods, or Dussehra Festival. Hundreds of villages each send their god (or debda), carried aloft on a palanquin, and accompanied by a dance troupe, and sometimes with a band. There is a friendly competition to outdo neighboring villages in the best dancing, music or revelry. Sometimes the gods will "fight" as the bearers tip the gods towards each other.
